The magic of printed t-shirts

The Prelude:
In my mind I saw a sea of gifts and my stomach was about to explode with what I imagined to be a thousand pink sparkly butterflies. My dad had finally come back from South Africa where he had been monitoring the elections. I was obviously excited to finally hug him, hear about his latest adventure and tell him that I had watched the news in hopes of seeing him on TV. At the same time, I will be honest with you and say that as a 7-year old girl living in Kenya, I was also excited about the prospect of presents. My dad had a gift (pun intended!) of bringing home great presents after his travels. This time was no different. To be precise he brought me an outfit which he described as “so me.” It was a pair of blue spandex pants paired with a printed white t-shirt, a matching bowler hat and a wallet (remember this was the 90’s so everything had to match). The t-shirt had printed stick-figures of smiley faces in different colours that just made you smile and laugh when you looked at it. I loved it. So much that we had an impromptu photo shoot as you can see below:
In the year(s) that followed, that printed t-shirt became my go-to piece for when I wanted a laugh. Whenever I had a ‘blah’ day and it seemed like the world might well come to an end (which, as is turns out, is quite often for a 7-year old girl) I put on that t-shirt. It seemed to add a lightheartedness to many glum situations and made me (and those around me) forget what was going on for a while.
The Point :
Sometimes you just need to escape reality and have a laugh. Even if it’s only for a second, that smile and the following little chuckle can be all you need to get through the day.
