Sweater Weather
The Prelude:
The day has arrived. I can’t postpone it any longer. I also can’t pretend that the goose bumps and shivers aren’t there, and I won’t even mention the looks that I have been getting as I walk down the street with my espadrilles. It’s time, I know.
So long my sweet swimsuits and cover-ups. Farewell my favorite fruit-printed dresses. Til next year, my open-toed shoes. Goodbye my gorgeous woven bags. I’m sure that it has been a memory-filled summer for you all, leaving your clothes with permanent stains, which I’m also sure will disappear on their own by next summer.
As I mourn the end of the summer season and look out the window on this dark and rainy day, I hear a distant sound of a crumpling Spacesaver bag (vacuum bag, as I call them) paired with my husband saying, “I brought this down for you!” When I turn to look, my heart instantly skips a beat: My sweaters! I had completely forgotten that the time of year for cozying up soft, plushy goodness had arrived.
The butterflies started fluttering as I went through my sweaters, the memories of when I wore them last rushing back to me. That’s really what I love about clothes- the memories they contain.
Now, to be honest with you, after going down memory lane and letting my sentimental side come out, another, more devious side came out-The shopping one. I start to dream about all of the new sweaters that I’ve been wanting for the upcoming sweater season #yay. Over the course of the summer, I had already decided that I needed a new white sweater for the season because I “didn’t have any” and had seen some adorable ones. As I wonder which white sweater to get from my wish list, I look down at the pile of sweaters on my bed. I freeze and say that four-lettered word which somehow always fits, regardless the situation (hint: it starts with an F). Over half of my sweaters were already white. FML. I take a second look to check if i might have gone color blind and then realize that they are actually more “cream” colored than white. In fact, while all of these cream sweaters were different styles and cuts, perfect for different occasions, they still didn’t look anything like the new white sweater that I wanted to buy. #problemsolved. Looks like it’s time to go shopping!
The Point:
I really love sweaters and for several reasons. Firstly, it’s that time of the year where the weather is getting colder, and the days are getting shorter so the only thing you want to do is cozy up in something that will keep you warm (this is the reason why the term “sweater weather” exists). And a sweater does just that-keep you cozy and warm. Secondly, bikini season is over, and the holidays are around the corner. A sweater, while it can be tailored, is more forgiving of that burrito you had last night. Finally, and most importantly, the versatility that a sweater has from its color, cut, knit and material means they can be used for all occasions. #win. AND, it means you almost always have an excuse to by a new one because no two sweaters are the same (ok, that’s a lie, but you get the idea).
